Alex called on the drive from the diner to Sebastian's, and he knew she wouldn't be able to answer, so he left a voice mail.
Hey, Meghan, it's me. Alex. Just thought I'd leave you a voice mail so you'd have my number. That's better than just calling and hanging up, right? Anyway, I'd like to take you out. I thought maybe a cruise out to Blake Island on Saturday? They do it up right with a clambake and all that. There's one on Saturday evening at 6:30. Um... Anyway, call me...
He hit the button on the dash to kill the connection and let out a breath. "I sounded so fucking high school...."

Later that night or sometime early the next morning, Riley woke up needing something to drink. After making a stop by the bathroom, she padded to the kitchen, passing by her cell phone, jacket, and helmet on the chair and table in the living room area. After taking a couple swallows of water, she bit at her lower lip in contemplation. She debated on whether or not to make the call for a long moment before making her way over to the jacket. His card was pulled free and after sitting her water aside, she picked up the phone and was about to dial his number when she noticed she had a missed call. She listened to the message and heard Alex's voice. Meghan then dialed his number. Anxiety set in as it rang before she breathed a sigh of relief when the voice mail kicked in.
"Hey...Alex.. Um, this is Riley..er... Meghan. I was returning your phone call and I just wanted to say I'm really sorry about what happened earlier. I don't know what got into him." She paused and corrected herself. "Well, I do, but its a long story. Anyway, Just wanted to call and apologize. As for maybe going out... I don't see why we can't. It might be good for me to get out and see a little of the city or whatever. I will see you again soon and we can try and talk about whatever. So... yeah, hope you had a good night."
She ended the call, stared down at the phone and then both phone and card were placed back into the inside pocket of her leather jacket. She finished off her water, put the glass in the sink and padded back to the bed, snuggling up to her friend Asher and was soon, once again, sleeping.

He'd gone to a club after leaving Sebastian's. In retrospect it had been a big mistake, one he'd pay for until the hangover wore off. He had a vague recollection of hanging upside down by the knees from the balcony rail, mostly because he remembered the change from his pockets hitting him in the face as it fell. After that incident, he decided it would be best if he went home. He didn't know what the hell had been in the freshy's system but it was strong fucking shit, that was for certain.
He'd been walking across the floor below on his way out when he found his phone. Tripped, rather, over his phone. Apparently it too had fallen out of his pocket along with his change. He was still checking it over as he walked out to the car when he noted he'd missed a call. He listened to the voice mail and smiled, then stupidly called her back. Cardinal rule. Never call a chick you ever hope to see again while stoned on freshy.
"Hey, Meghan, it's me again...." He giggled, yes giggled. "Sorry... Went out, wish you were here. You know what? Fuck waiting until Saturday. I want you now...." there was dead silence for a moment and then, "Oh, God, that sounded kind of perverted. I'm really not a pervert." A grunt would be heard as he slid into the car and then the closing of the car door. "I'm going to hang up now, but I wanted you to know that I can't wait to see you again."
It was then that he passed out, fortunately in the car, sprawled across the front seat, face mashed into the passenger side door panel.

It was several hours later when Riley woke up for the day. After grabbing a bite to eat, she thought to call her dad to check in. When the phone was pulled out, she noticed she had another missed call. After listening to the message, she was unsure what to think about the call.
She dialed his number back and waited for either an answer or the voice mail. The voice mail kicked on and she left her second message.
"Hey, its me again...I...got your last message. Are you drunk? I hope you're sleeping it off by now. I'll see you Saturday. Maybe. If not before then. Anyways, Hope you're okay."
She wasn't sure what to think now... Maybe she should wait to get to know him better before going out alone with him. It was something to think on as she went about getting her shower and dressing for the day. Then she would make the call to her dad to let him know she was with Asher and safe.

There was a niggling something at the back of his mind that told him he'd fucked up. That niggling something was what drew him out of slumber. He rolled, feet hitting the floor, one hand going to his head. He needed a drink. Something fresh. Something pure. He rose and headed into the kitchen. He'd fallen asleep in his clothes and they reeked of the night's revelry. He pulled them off as he went, kicking them aside.
In the kitchen he headed for the fridge, and he didn't even bother to warm it, just pulled his breakfast out and drank deeply. When the last corpuscle had passed his lips, he finally set the carafe down, elbows on the kitchen island, head in his hands. As the sweet nectar worked its magicks, the dawning realization that he had in fact, fucked up hit him full force.
He ran back toward his bedroom, grabbing up his clothes and rummaging through his pockets as he did so, trying to find his phone. It was laying on the bedroom floor. He snatched it up and sat down, dreading what he'd see when he checked the screen.
One missed call. It seemed to be mocking him. He pulled up his voicemail and listened. His trepidation was only minimized slightly by her message. There was a hesitancy in her voice, something underneath the words. What had he said?
He dialed her back, fully prepared to be apologetic to the Nth degree. He didn't know whether to be relieved or not when it rolled to voice. "Meghan, I am so sorry for what ever it was I said earlier. Some ass spiked my drink with God knows what. What ever kind of moron I was, that's not me. I want to see you. I thought maybe a trip to Smith Tower. There's an excellent view of the city from the Chinese Room. See you soon." He ended the call and shook his head. "Dumb ass."

As she was in the check out line, her phone rang but she was unable to answer it as she was paying for a few necessary items she had needed for herself. Especially considering since Asher's place was not exactly female friendly. She reached her ride, opened the hatch and the two plastic bag of items were placed in the Trike hatch before she mounted. Hand reached in to the inside pocket for pull out the phone. She saw the missed call and debated on whether to listen or not. Aviator like shades were slipped into place before she decided to listen to the voice mail. After listening... she glanced around, thinking and then called back.
"Hey Alex... Got your message and um... I'm not sure about plans now." She paused as she looked around. Hazels shifted beneath dark shades here and there as she idly gazed about. "I mean... Still for Saturday or what? Are we still talking Blake Island or this Smith Tower?" There was another small pause as keys were pulled from her pocket and slipped in to the ignition. "I'm not familiar with either and don't know what to expect. So... I guess just give me a call or text me."
She ended the call. Riley knew that something had been off. That maybe he'd been drinking... and she told herself he deserved the benefit of the doubt and that surely he was a nice guy. But something continued to nag at her, making her wonder if she shouldn't politely decline until after getting to know him better out in public and around others. Had Asher been right, she wondered? All these thoughts raced through her mind. Finally, she slid the helmet on, turned the engine over and then hauled ass back 'home'.

Damn, he'd missed another call while in the shower. He dove for it, towel wrapped around his hips, the ringing ending just as his fingers brushed the phone and sent it skittering off the nightstand and onto the floor somewhere under the bed. He dropped down and dragged it out from under the bed, then pulled up his voice mail. Listening, he heard the doubt, the confusion, and groaned. Dragging a hand through his hair he stared at the phone, as if willing it to ring again, and then gave that up, dialing her number and listening as it rang.

She had just gotten in and had parked the Trike in the garage. Helmet and shades were removed before she unloaded the two bags from the hatch. Bags were set on the table. It was then her when her phone began to ring. It was pulled out and she answered.
