It would seem there is some confusion as to the processes of these two acts, so I am going to break it down here.
Bonding:
A bond formed between a vampire, and a human or were be it lycan, lion, panther, etc, is a process through which the vampire marks the one to be bonded. This process is described in the Creature Feature page under the heading of Vampires.
When two animals, or in this case weres, again be it lycan, lion, panther, etc, mate, it is a matter of selection. The heart chooses the mate. Some animals are monogamous, though actual wolves are not. In an actual wolf pack, there is generally one alpha male, a number of females, and their offspring. As the offspring matures, the younger alpha males go out and form their own packs.
With Lycans, and likely with other weres, the mating bond is consensual and monogamous. It is, like with whales and penguins, for life. If the mate dies, the surviving mate will live out the rest of their life alone. It is not something that is taken lightly. One chooses a mate very carefully. It is not marriage where one can divorce one's self from it. It is a lifelong commitment. Anyone forming such a relationship needs to think quite carefully on the matter, before hand.
There is no specific act to be performed when mating between lycans occurs, though with actual wolves it has been known for a female to be fought over by two rival alphas in the same pack. In such instances, there is usually more on the line than the female in question but pack rule as well. He who has the most toys, as it is said, wins.
The origins of the differences between wolves and lycans in regard to mating is not known and somewhat confusing. Wolves themselves are not monogamous; why lycans would be is unclear as man himself is not monogamous by nature. Human males are geared toward spreading their seed far and wide to propagate the species. Lycans are by definition wolf men. I don't know if this monogamous mating is an Anita Blake-ism or if it is somewhere, somehow steeped in lycan lore. If it is, I have not yet read of it.
