A hellhound is a supernatural dog, found in folklore. A wide variety of ominous or hellish supernatural dogs occur in mythologies around the world, similar to the ubiquitous dragon. Features that have been attributed to hellhounds include black fur, glowing red or sometimes glowing yellow eyes, super strength or speed, ghostly or phantom characteristics, foul odor, and sometimes even the ability to talk. Legend says that if someone is to stare into its eyes three times or more, that person will surely die.
They are often assigned to guard the entrances to the world of the dead, such as graveyards and burial grounds, or undertake other duties related to the afterlife or the supernatural, such as hunting lost souls or guarding a supernatural treasure. In European legends, seeing a hellhound or hearing it howl may be an omen of death.
Some supernatural dogs, such as the Welsh Cŵn Annwn, were actually believed to be benign. However, encountering them was still considered to be a sign of imminent death.
Hellhounds are aggressive, violent dogs that can and do serve demons. They commonly appear to kill a person who has made a deal with a Crossroads Demon allowing the person's soul to be harvested by hell. In the days proceeding the end of a person's time, they will appear to the victim in dreams. The person will also hallucinate, and be able to see the true face of demons when they are possessing humans. Their origin is unknown. They are also used to hunt down renegade demons and drag them back to hell.
They are not shape shifters, but instead remain in their true form, invisible from all but those close to death who are destined for hell.
Powers and Abilities
Tremendous strength and speed.
Can drag human souls to Hell.
Are invisible to humans until that person is near death or looking through an object scorched with Holy Fire such as a pair of glasses.
It is said once they have the scent of a person they won't stop until they catch them.
Weaknesses
Can be killed using a number or all of these components: salt, iron nails, and explosives.
Can also be killed by the legendary Colt made for killing supernatural entities and quite possibly rock-salt shotgun blasts too.
Can be harmed and killed by an Angel Sword as well.
They can be kept at bay with Goofer Dust, Devil's Shoestring, and salt.
Can be killed by the Demon Knife.
