Continued from Garfield High School: Disney Lip Sync gone wrong
The silence in the car between her and her Dad was unbearable. Sarah stared forlornly out the window as the rain previously began to come down slightly harder than before. Sun was still shining on, however, despite the clouds. She was hugging her backpack to her, legs crossed in front of her, with her elbow propped up against the door while holding her chin. Her Dad's jaw was jutted out slightly, mouth in that disappointed scowl, even both hands were on the steering wheel. She could sense that he had words to say, just couldn't bring himself to say them... not without that disappointment coming out like venom.
Finally, the tension was cut through.
"Dad, there wasn't a lighter, I swear-
"Sarah, I don't know what's-"
They both had started at the same time. Making both stop and just look at each other, if only just a second's glimpse as the silence fell between them again. Sarah waiting for her Dad to continue and he waiting for her. Licking her lips, Sarah took a deep breath and started again.
"I didn't have a lighter, Dad." She said finally, slowly bringing herself to look up at him.
"Why would they say you had one then?" He asked, deciding to start out with that instead of taking on the problem all at once.
"I... I don't know..." Sarah replied, lifting a hand to brush through her hair. "Look, Dad, there's something I need to tell-"
"Sarah, I don't know what's gotten into you." He said finally, cutting her off, glancing over at her periodically while still watching the road. "First you deliberately disobeyed me, in the Bahamas, by taking a boat out to sea when I specifically asked you to stay at the house."
"Dad, I know, and I'm sorry, but Ki-"
"And then you get detention on your first day of school? And now you've been suspended, for a week." He finished, frowning by this point. "At first, I will admit, I thought this Ki you keep hanging around was a bad influence; but now I don't know if it is him, this move we had to make, or is this just some sort of phase you're going through."
"Ki has nothing to do with this!" Sarah exclaimed defensively then sighed, both hands brushing over her face and up through her hair. "Dad, please, it's not the move. I miss home, Lani, and Millie... I do, but it's not even that..."
"Then enlighten me Sarah. What is going on with you?"
She stared at her Dad in silence for what felt like forever, but really wasn't too long. Anxiously, she shifted to drop her backpack in the backseat and shifted to try and sit sideways so she could face him better, one leg tucked underneath her. Her hands were shaking out of nerves - while she would have much rather of waited for when she had control, something Ki had eluded to helping her get, Sarah knew it had to be done now.
"I wish I knew, but listen. I'm not normal..." Sarah said, praying and praying that he would just hear her out... and maybe even something could happen that would help her in her endeavor to talk to him. "I've been hiding this for years from you, but it's only been getting worse. I... can do things... that no one else can..."
"Sarah..."
"No, Dad, please? Just... listen. I hid it from Millie too... Lani only knew some of it, Ki I've told all to..." She held up a shaking hand when seeing her Dad about to speak again. "Just... stop... I'm trying here." She said, panic in her voice, and in her mind she could feel pressure building - whether it was real or only her imagination, she couldn't tell... but she tried ignoring it. "I... can hear what people think, feel what they feel..." She quickened her explanation when she saw him start to shake his head. "No, Dad, it's real... I swear it... I can make things happen... I just can't control it..."
"What are you talking about, Sarah?" He asked, slightly annoyed at this false explanation she was giving him, but waiting to see how far it would go.
"Look, take me to Discovery Park, let me show you... I can hold my breath under water for like... forever, Lani clocked me at forty-five minutes once..."
"No. I will not play into this game." The car was stopped at a light while he looked straight ahead rather than at Sarah's pleading eyes. "All I wanted was the truth and you can't even give me that. I am taking you home and dropping you off. You can keep your phone, but you are grounded, Sarah." He said, finally looking at her. "For the rest of the month - longer if you keep this up. I will ask the neighbor to keep an eye on you - Yes, Sarah, I cannot trust you by yourself anymore." The last part added as she opened her mouth to protest. "For the month that you are grounded, you will not see this Ki either."
And that was what set off the waterworks... quite literally. As he started to drive with the green light, out of nowhere, water busted through the pavement and began flooding the street. Cars that were in the area swerved to avoid the bursting water as well as each other. The car in which Sarah and her Dad were in, however, got soaked having not been far from said water main that inexplicably decided to burst. Her Dad hit the brakes at first, then quickly pulled off the road, Sarah - in a panic - opened the passenger door before he even stopped it and backed away from the car - the spraying water making every thing and one not sheltered soaked real quick.
"Get back in the car, Sarah!" He yelled, having tried to lean over to grab her before she jumped out.
"No! You're not even listening to me!" She replied back, breathing heavy. The rain that had been falling previously now turned into a full rain storm - just without the thunder and lightning. "What reason, Dad, do I have to lie to you? I made a mistake once, ONCE, in the Bahamas... and you hold it over my head like that? I am trying to tell you what is wrong and you blame someone else?" She shook her head... her phone would be useless at this rate, soaked to the bone from the mix of rain and the water main. In the distance, sirens were heard as action was called on to handle the inexplainable burst. Blonde hair matted down to her head, she just stared at her Dad helplessly as he climbed out of the car and started toward her.
"Track this." She said, pulling her phone out of her pocket and dropping it to the flooded street, then backing away quickly from him before turning around and going at a run. Granted, she was considerably slowed down by being water logged, but when Sarah didn't want to get caught, she could still run pretty good albeit slower than some would expect. It was also the way she took that aided her in getting away.
