Known History:
Theudebert of Soissons was the eldest son of King Chiperic I of Soissons, of his first wife Audovera. Theudebert was given
command of Soissons in the early years of his father’s reign. When his father precipitated a war with his brother Sigebert I of Austrasia, Sigebert marched on his capital and took the city, capturing and imprisoning Theudebert. He was out of prison a year later. On the death of King Charibert I of Paris in 567, Theudebert invaded Austrasia and razed many cities. It is widely believed, and well “documented” that Theudebert of Soissons was killed in battle in 575 by Guntram Boso in the civil war between his father, Chilpéric I, King of Neustria and his uncles Sigebert I, King of Austrasia and Guntram, King of Burgundy.
The Unknown:
Theudebert did not die in battle as many records might indicate in 575. By technicality he did “die” in a fashion, but the absolution in death was not his to be held. For his valor on the battlefield that night had nothing to do with his uncles as records of the day suggested after the fact. Theudebert and his merry band of throat slitting noble knights had snuck into the camp of his uncle, Guntram, and left without incident. The sentries posted had been dispatched, and the main body remained deep in slumber. Theudebert and his men had worked hard through the night conducting shenanigans, removing the armor from soldiers tents to be discarded with in the nearby creek. Loosing the horses of his uncles forces to roam free, and as a final parting gift to incite chaos they had lit ablaze several of the encampments tents ablaze via torch fire. Day by day Theudebert and his men valiantly engaged the forces of his uncle in fierce combat, and by night they amused themselves and aided the efforts of his father, Chilpéric I, in the civil war by conducting such malicious harassment of his uncles and their forces. Theudebert had no idea that he that night would become victim of his own success. The decision of their fates had been made weeks prior, for they nine had been stalked for months, after a careful period of having been watched by night. The things of story, nightmare, and which made strong men tremble in the dark revealed themselves to Theudebert on a break in march. He and his men fought them, those of the dark, fiercely with their steel. Steel, strategy, and killing blows weren’t enough. They had been the things of nightmares, unreal, and in seconds had reduced Theudebert’s men to corpses so savaged that they no longer resembled human beings but amalgamations of steel and flesh more resembling small scattered mounds of claret soaked slop than anything else. Theudebert was not given a choice, for his fate had already been decided. The official story, the believed story, was that mercenaries loyal to Guntram, his uncle, had tracked and slain Theudebert and cohort. Theudebert had lived on… in a sense. He had been created anew, the product of some larger insidious design, a vampire. Melchior. An ancient vixen that might as well have been the Christian character known as Satan.
Theudebert, the son of France, that the world knew was dead… and for many decades until his human kin, blood descendants would not know his face nor remember his name he was forbidden by his maker to surface in his familial homeland. The rise and fall of dynasty’s, the descendants of his blood whom had remained in power irrelevant to him, other than of concern to those “of the blood” were no longer concern of his. His newfound powers and strength as a vampire, even limited by the night hours, had been outstanding even newly transitioned. The clan and bloodline that had absorbed Theudebert was of Marmee Noir. Among vampire bloodlines they had another level of exclusivity concerning the sharing of blood and procreation… for it was by policy of his maker, then ruling elder of the bloodline while the Dark Mother slept in forced slumber, to only sire among born nobility. In the early decades, for the first five centuries of Theudeberts vampire existence, he functioned in a cohort of vampires not much unlike his nine knights departed as his bloodlines enforcement arm. Which was to say he among many of his kind were waging the rekindling of an ancient war between all vampire kind and their more mortal, though powerful, enemy in those known to him as Loup Garou. With each passing century Theudebert adopted a new name that was as he was known, in compliance with the standards set by his maker. The ancient vampire campaign of genocide to cleanse the Earth of lycanthropes that would not be bent to vampire will and agenda, thus his, had kept the number of the wolf worldwide hovering in the low hundreds.
As the world evolved, so did the tools available for those of the vampire to wage their war and control their interests. Plays for power were made, pawns were positioned, throats were slit, and ultimately the end result of such was that the vampire nation ironically enough came to control the entity which did dictate to even nations and their Kings… the Catholic Church. Human wars were instigated to covertly further vampire agendas, namely that they could continue their campaign of genocide under the
smokescreen of a Human “Holy” war. One fueled the next in the never ending cycle of bloodshed, which raged through the 13th century as the campaign was come to be called “The Crusades”. There was a known human agenda, which was being driven by a secret vampire agenda which culminated all the while and even after the properly dated end of the Crusades of the Church in 1291 did continue in lesser recorded actions. Theudebert was at Antioch in 1097, and had directed the massacre on a summer night’s victory in 1098. The standard military practice of the time dictated that when the enemy refused to surrender, that the Crusaders would eliminate all within the besieged city’s walls once captured. Which of course was a smokescreen, Theudebert was being thorough in eliminating the power base of Loup Garou within the walls of Antioch before the rise of the full moon after the fall of the human puppet soldiers. The Siege of Antioch had also added a great deal of wealth in spoils to the Councils coffers… as well the personal coffers of Theudebert.
Meanwhile a clan brother, Raymond de’ Saint Gilles, was being disciplined for his brutal success in the Siege of Ma’arra… While successful as Theudebert had always been, his clan brother had broken the veil of secrecy… Despite a well laid cover up, the infamous rumor and record of “Cannibalism” displayed on part of the Crusaders escaped and has remained ever present. Cannibalism was used as a plausible explanation, white wash, for the fact that the Crusader force was vampire heavy and that the resulting massacre was not a conventional one… The vampires terrorized, tortured, and fed on the occupants of Ma’arra for days after the walls fell, the shrieks and wails of the dead and dying the only sound other than the crackling of blazing fires and the wind. There was being thorough, and then there was mixing business with pleasure which did often lend to crossing the threshold of recklessness. It was chronicled that men and women were boiled in cauldrons, that children were impaled on spits, and devoured among many other atrocities… which was indeed a cover for the tortures indescribable that occurred in Ma’arra which made the Cannibalism cover ever more plausible. Theudebert had instigated the events, more so that he had instigated a competitive spark in Raymond after the victory in Antioch. Theudebert was every bit the Sadist that Raymond had been, and more, though Raymond had committed the fatal sin of failing to be discreet in actually crossing that “line”. It was for the actions of Raymond that for the first time Theudebert had witnessed another of his kind slain by those of his own blood. The masked ones had come.
One year later, Theudebert had been sent to the walls of Jerusalem to “advise” and “assist” the human Crusaders which had reached the city with a troop of his clan mates. So began the Siege of Jerusalem. It was a siege of brutal efficiency, and in only one weeks’ time were the human Crusaders successful in breaching the walls of Jerusalem. Theudebert and company had played a vital role in this, though little known and never recorded. Again Theudebert directed the massacre of the remaining population regardless of obvious combatant status… In the spirit of being thorough, but nothing as careless as what had been done in Ma’arra, the occupants were systematically and unceremoniously tortured for information and executed. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was established, as well the County of Edessa, the Principality of Antioch, and the County of Tripoli. The affairs of the human Church and its Crusaders not necessarily in line with the agenda of their vampire overlords then that the major strongholds and havens of Loup Garou had been exterminated… had begun to shift, and take loss in that the enemies of the human puppets began to strike back… Prompting further Crusades, which in turn allowed for a continuance of the vampire campaign to exterminate the Loup Garou. By then the smokescreen of compelled human Crusades took a life and purpose of their own outside the vampire agenda. Theudebert had permanently it seemed, sealed his reputation as a ruthless tactician and enforcer of his bloodlines will. Crusade beget Crusade, beget Crusade, and so until the year 1272. Theudebert played decisive roles in many battles and sieges to further the agenda of his clan and vampire kind wherever there was an interest present. By the end of the Crusades official, a new threat had begun to gain ground. The Crusades had made vampires like Theudebert exceedingly wealthy, and there was no money like blood money, powerful, and renown within their respective bloodlines. The whispers, the beginnings of it had begun in 1231 though butchers like Theudebert were not
redirected until nearly a century later when the whole civilized world was paying attention.
The beginnings of Inquisitio Haereticae Pravitatis, or the “Inquisition”, were little known. The practice of magic, the magic in the blood carried through the lines of particular mortals were known to vampires and to some extent those of that blood did make themselves known in their world. It was when in 1231 a movement had begun on the part of those of magical blood, known as witches, to put an end to the crusades and the agenda of the vampire nation through magical interference that the vampire nations declared a second war. A war against witches, which even in its infancy had proven to be as bloody and efficient as their millennia long campaign of genocide against the Loup Garou. Naturally the Catholic Church was the face of this new vampire agenda. In 1408 the Belle Morte through the influence of Sigismund, the King of Hungary and later Holy Roman Emperor, founded Ordo Dracul … Order of the Dragon. The human initiates were kept in the dark as to the true purpose of the order, though in reality the Council had altered the initial campaign of genocide concerning the witches and magic users. Instead of exterminating them, they would seduce them, compel them, and by any means necessary either sway them to side or consume them for the narcotic properties of their magic. It was generally preferred, safer, practice to eradicate them outright. Theudebert had earned renown as a witch hunter, with almost the same infamy as his days hunting lycanthropes. The human inductees of the created order were limited in number to affluent individuals and other than the premise of defending the Cross and fighting the enemies of Christianity, of God, these nobles were directed to be the ever watchful eye in the region which was a hotbed for the bloodlines of magic users. Ordo Dracul in its efforts, and namely stemming from the efforts of one man had given rise in part to the legend of Dracula – Vlad the Impaler. Vlad III, while being a loyal and instrumental human inductee in Ordo Dracul, despite some rumors was not actually ever transitioned to “the blood” as a vampire. From 1231 in its infancy, the inquisition picked up steam and proved ultimately effective and brutal through the mid-18th Century.
In 1860 for unexplained reasons, and despite the success of the campaign to eliminate the blood of the lines which used magic… the vampire elders ceded in their resolve and organized surviving representatives of the various covens to form a “treaty”. The composition of the Council had changed. Ending in a daring Coup which left his maker in imposed torpor alongside Marmee Noir deep underground in “the black tower”. With such change? Came a change in policy for all vampire kind in their over dealings with other preternatural entities. From the creation of Ordo Dracul in 1408, until the signing of the treaty Theudebert had in between the hunts of Loup Garou indulged himself in a new and exciting sport. Using actionable intelligence, or acting upon discovery, Theudebert became something of an artist when it came to using his prowess and vampiric ability to seduce and charm witches before he stole their sex, blood, and magic like nights of perceived power enhancing “high”… which was to say, when the need for “Sport” prevailed over the simplicity in compulsion and simply taking “it”… or conquering them by violence. Theudebert was a charming sadist, who as if at the drop of a hat could go from the image of a perfect noble gentleman, charming and beautiful, to that of a living nightmare. For nearly four hundred years Theudebert had put his focus not into the affairs of men, battle, and the like but even more the aggressive acquisition of wealth and power. Theudebert became somewhat detached from his clan, from his blood, not so much a bid for independence but it simply seemed to be the trend of the times but he was the traditional soldier and cared not for politics. He had come into his own by then as an elder of the Marmee Noir, even if he was still a “junior” elder, and the four hundred years of indulging himself on the blood of witches, shedding it, consuming it, had certainly secured the fact that he would become one of the leaders of the Marmee Noir line.
Theudebert had been something of a recluse when it comes to vampire society… managing the affairs of clan via proxy of his underlings up until recently. It is 2012, nearly 2013… Theudebert of Soissons died in 575 A.D. Since then he had been known by many names, but today he is known as Sebastian Alderic Saint-Arsène, an independently wealthy French national… playboy debonair more than anything in the “public” eye. For the first time in a very long time has the world seen his face, however in the “light” rather than his acclimated world of shadows. Once reclusive, he has begun to take on both vampire and mortal society alike with a spark and fervor that many youth of the blood attribute to his “old age”, perhaps madness, though he is hardly well known as a vampire. It has taken him over millennia to realize the simplest of things, a new war to fight, is within himself… the evolution of the creature he has become and somewhere buried the man thought dead. For all that he has accomplished and become, there are many things he reflects with regret having found absent or lacking and longs to acquire. Oddly, for a vampire of his position and age he has never entered into the bond and taking of any proper human or otherwise servant, much less that he has ever been a maker. Even with the modern age, the revelation of the darkness and the existence, despite his newfound spark the fact that he is of the blood is a secret not many outside of the blood know. As many of the “elderly” vampires within the world His holdings and other assets rival and exceed that of some small nations, or in some cases several as result of his aggressive activities in centuries past. He maintains a penthouse in Paris, France, and a large Chateau estate in the countryside as well a building, namely penthouse, in New York City’s upper east side, a Moscow penthouse, and a New Orleans French quarter manor. More quietly does Sebastian exert his influence over his interests than once upon a time Theudebert of Soissons, or by any other name in any other time had.
For a brief time, most of the year 2012 AD, Sebastian ruled as Master of the City in the city of Seattle, WA. It is entirely unknown by most, save for the Council, why he abandoned his position there for other pursuits overseas. Now a quarter into 2013, his presence is once again felt in the Americas… in his old city.
